Virginia Wineries

A true friend reaches for your hand and puts a glass of wine in it. – Sam Hepburn

Who knew Virginia had so many great vineyards and wineries? I added Virginia wineries to my bucket list as I sat in my house in 2020 during the pandemic wondering when I would be able to see the world again. 2020 was a hard year for almost everyone due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Emotional, physical, and mental struggles were all very common.  And, although I am an introvert and found being locked in the house somewhat therapeutic, I am not used to being told I must stay at home.  Most of us were able to adapt to the situation, and one thing I did was try to find beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy. Virginia wineries offer plenty of beauty. Oh, and they have wine too!

Even after living in the Washington, DC area for over a decade, I did not know there were over 300 Virginia wineries in my backyard. I have spent the last 20 plus years trying to accomplish as much on my bucket list as possible. But, to be honest, wines from Virginia were not at the top of my list. Before the pandemic, I visited a small number of Virginia wineries. Frankly, I was impressed by the vineyards’ properties, but not so much the wine. However, over the last year, I have been on a Virginia wine journey, and I have slightly changed my mind about Virginia wines.

Someone recently said that Virginia wines are where California wines were in the nineties. I was somewhere between middle and high school, so I do not know if that’s true. But if so, then Virginia wines have some catching up to do. I know I may be a little harsh on Virginia wines but keep reading. You will see that Virginia wineries have found a place in my heart.
